How to drive safer in Athens with new seatbelts and right-way laws
Reading time: 2 minutes

The City of Athens adopted a Transportation Safety Action Plan (SAP) on March 23, 2026.
As a result of a collaboration between the city staff and the Athens Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) organization, this plan is designed to decrease accidents and prioritize safety for Athens.
By 2040, the transportation plan is set to reduce vehicle accidents by 10% annually. The approach describes projects and countermeasures to achieve this goal.

What the plan entails

The U.S. Department of Transportation uses the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to finance surface transportation initiatives through the discretionary grant program called Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A).
An SS4A grant for the creation of a Safety Action Plan (SAP) was given to Athens in 2024. The objective of this plan is to offer a cooperative, data-driven approach to lower transportation injuries on Athens Roads.
The plan includes eight key components:
- Leadership + goal setting
- Planning structure
- Safety analysis
- Engagement + collaboration
- Equitable public engagement
- Policy + process changes
- Strategy + project selections
- Progress + transparency
Athens is committed to lowering the number of road accidents one day at a time.
By identifying patterns using accident and census data, along with public input, the SS4A will be able to prioritize public safety and have the full SAP plan in action.
