As the completion of the new city hall draws near, many people have wondered what will become of the old building on Fountain Circle.

We learned of plans to repurpose the lot into a new area of Big Spring Park last year, and now more steps have been taken with a contract being approved for the design of the new expansion.

On Thursday, the city announced that it has approved a design contract with Bostick Landscape Architects to oversee the implementation of the former city hall site into Big Spring Park.

“As our downtown thrives, so does the need for recreational spaces. This property presents an opportunity to expand Big Spring Park, solidifying its position as a cherished City landmark. By enlarging the footprint, we provide an even larger public space for everyone to enjoy.”

Mayor Tommy Battle

The old city hall sits between Big Spring Park and a large section of sloped field (pictured above) that would also be included in the design plans. The plans are expected to include two to three terrace plaza levels, a pavilion, new sidewalk/hardscape connections to Church Street, new landscaping and irrigation and additional lighting/electrical infrastructure.

Big Spring Park has seen an increase in city-held events and foot traffic over the last few years and it sounds like the new expansion is going to help alleviate the crowd management and technical issues that these events bring.

What’s the timeline?

The new city hall is expected to begin the transfer process from the old building to the new one in the coming months, with hopes to be fully moved out around June.

The contract for the new section of the park calls for a design completion date of Sept. 14 and the old city hall will be demolished in stages throughout the first half of 2025.

Work on the new section of the park should begin sometime after that, though no official time range has been offered for when the new section of the park might open.
