NEW: Huntsville’s Public Art Trail will expand into Medical District
Construction began this week to build a new sculpture on Huntsville Hospital’s lawn along Governor’s Drive. The sculpture, which will stand at 21 feet tall and 25 feet wide, will connect Downtown Huntsville’s Public Art Trail to the Medical District.
The sculpture will be called “Moon Gate” and is designed by local artist and UAH Professor of Art Glenn Dasher. The piece was commissioned by the King family in memory of the late Olin B. King, who played a vital role in Huntsville’s transition to the space and technology industries.
What will this new piece on the Art Trail look like?
Dasher began designing this sculpture over 20 years ago, starting with the collection of limestone columns that survived the 2002 demolition of the Parkway City Mall.
“These wonderful columns reminded me of an old city. They became my starting point for telling the story about this remarkable place, its people, and the unique events that sent humans into space, to the Moon, and beyond…In its quest for modernization, through all of its various manifestations, Huntsville has never lost its beauty, warmth, and Southern charm. It is like no other place I know of, and this sculpture is my effort to pay tribute to that.”
Glenn Dasher, Professor of Art, The University of Alabama in Huntsville
The columns will combine with stainless steel to make for a breathtaking display for patients, employees and the community alike. The project should be complete this fall.
