NEW: Huntsville Ice Sports Center Is Getting An Expansion
Reading time: 2 minutes
The Huntsville City Council recently approved and awarded a design contract for a major expansion of the Huntsville Ice Sports Center.
This comes as the city is seeing an uptick in ice sports and the complex is struggling to meet the demand.
The Expansion
The City Council awarded a $1.6 million design contract to Arcspace Studio to design the new expansion of the ice sports center.
The expansion is set to include:
- Two new full-size ice rinks with seating sections
- A new dedicated curling rink
- Amenity upgrades
- A new parking lot and landscaping
There has not been a timeline or budget for the construction of these expansions announced yet.
Ice Sports at the complex
The ice sports center currently provides its facilities for many activities including hockey, curling, broomball, figure skating, public skating, skating lessons, birthday parties, private events, regional tournaments and more.
The space is also used as the practice area for local teams including the Huntsville Havoc, UAH and the Rocket City Curling Club. With the increased interest in ice sports here in Huntsville and the increasing demand for use of the space, an expansion to the complex is long past due.
Two new rinks will provide a much-needed elevation to the tight planning and scheduling needed to allow all the various teams and organizations time on the ice. The addition of a dedicated curling rink will not only alleviate stress on the main rinks but allow the complex to host tournaments for the sport, something they say is already in the works.
