It might be getting colder, but it’s the perfect time and atmosphere for some fun winter activities in Huntsville! Whether you’re looking for more athletic options like walking or biking, or community-building options like arts and crafts, there’s something for everyone in this winter’s program guide.
You won’t just find exciting events in this guide, though! There are several events inviting the holiday spirit to the Rocket City.
Huntsville Parks + Recreation Winter Program Guide
Activities are divided into nine subsections, where you can explore the following opportunities:
- Parks + Playgrounds: sports like archery, pickleball + more available at more than 60 public parks
- Health + Wellness: walking groups, strength + movement classes + dance fitness
- Youth Activities + Programs: winter break camps + other youth programs including the new Rec Zone
- Arts + Crafts: holiday wreath workshop, scrapbook club + more
- Athletics: basketball, pickleball + more available at 15 recreation centers + six sports complexes
- Aquatics: morning water exercise, water polo + more
- Outdoors: adventure guides, bike rides in the Haysland Road area + more
- Therapeutic Recreation: art, games, fitness + sports
- Community Building: play, learn + connect with your community in various activities

Winter events to look out for
Check out these exciting events happening in the Huntsville area this winter:
- Big Spring Jingle: Friday, Dec. 8, 5-8PM — The whole of Big Spring Park will be transformed into a winter wonderland during this event, where you can enjoy holiday lighting, music, food trucks and a special visit from Santa himself.
- Drop + Shop: Tuesday, Dec. 19, 5:30-8PM — The first 50 children ages 6-12 who register can watch a holiday movie and play games while their parents finish up some last-minute shopping at Bridge Street Town Centre.
- Tinsel Trail: Nov. 24-Jan. 2 — A Huntsville favorite tradition that has been held for 13 years, the Tinsel Trail has lined Big Spring Park with over 400 live trees uniquely decorated for the season.
- Community Kite Festival: Saturday, March 2, 11AM-3PM — Bring your own kite or sit back and enjoy the breeze at the 12th annual festival, where there will be music, food trucks and more.
