Summertime in Alabama means sunny days beckoning us outdoors and finding ways to socialize in ways that take the edge off the heat. Surrounding ourselves with water on a leisurely river float fits the bill, and it’s even better with friends.

While experienced paddlers have their favorite spots, beginners can give it a try at the many spots offering kayak rentals in Huntsville and throughout North Alabama. The businesses listed are seasonal with varying hours, so we recommend you call ahead to secure your spot.

Kayak rentals in Huntsville + nearby

1. Brown Bear LLC in Huntsville

Brown Bear is a family-owned operation that’s been offering seasonal kayak rentals and floats on the Flint River since 2008. The floats last about 3.5 hours and cover about 5 miles.

2. North Alabama Canoe and Kayak in Brownsboro

Develop a knack for kayaking with NACK, or North Alabama Canoe and Kayak, which is about 15 minutes east of Huntsville off Highway 72. You arrive, pay cash, hop on a shuttle and ride about five minutes to the Flint River access. After a 3.5 hour, self-guided float, the shuttle picks you up to deliver you back to the shop.

3. TGL Adventures in Brownsboro

TGL Adventures offers kayak and canoe rentals with shuttle service back to the site, making it another great option for a day-trip float. Another cool option here is renting a geodome or campsite for a longer getaway in nature.

4. Paint Rock Canoe in Paint Rock

Although “canoe” is in the name, this outfitter rents kayaks just the same for lovely floats on the Paint Rock River. Getting there takes about 25 minutes by driving southeast of Huntsville.

5. DeSoto State Park in Mentone

Take in the views at DeSoto Falls picnic area before checking in there with DeSoto State Park staff at Miller’s Bend Paddle Shack. They’ll outfit you with the gear rentals you need for a scenic trip up the West Fork of Little River.

6. Islands Boat Rentals in Guntersville

Islands Boat Rental offers rentals on single and tandem kayaks to explore the waters of Lake Guntersville, with a convenient home base at Alred Marina, where you can stock up on ice, drinks and snacks for your adventure.

7. No Worries Kayak Rentals in Piedmont

True to its name, No Worries Kayak Rentals is open daily during the open season and doesn’t require reservations, but does recommend them for larger groups. The company’s Terrapin Creek floats are easy and great for all ages and experience levels.

8. Redneck Yacht Club & Canoe Rentals in Piedmont

Also open daily during the season, Redneck Yacht Club asks that you make reservations for rentals and offers two different floats: a short float to “Hippie Hole” on Terrapin Creek that takes three to four hours and another that lasts five to six hours on weekends and holidays.

9. Big Wills Outfitters in Attalla

Float Big Wills Creek with Big Wills Outfitters based in Attalla, which offers single and tandem kayak rentals, canoe rentals and shuttles for easy logistics. Note that while this one is family-friendly, it’s not suited for kids under age 7.

10. Bear Creek Canoe Run in Hackleburg

Enjoy the Bear Creek Floatway by kayak or canoe, if you choose, with this rental service open on Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day each year.

11. Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville

Joe Wheeler State Park offers single and tandem kayaks with life vests and safety equipment provided and rental options by the hour, half day and full day to explore Wheeler Lake at your own pace.

12. Flint Creek Canoe & Kayak Rental in Decatur

Taking bookings online and by phone only, the Morgan County Rescue Squad offers canoe and kayak rentals for four or eight hours, with transportation to and from multiple launch sites. Groups of four or more receive a 25% discount, and all proceeds benefit the squad.

COMING SOON: Kayak rentals at Pt. Mallard Park in Decatur

In early 2026, the City of Decatur approved funding for a new, accessible kayak launch, self-service kiosks for paddleboard and kayak rentals, and a floating dock.

The city partnered with North Alabama Trails and Recreation, the Alabama Scenic River Trail, state partners and local donors. The project has been pending approval by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which reviews all projects that impact the shoreline and water access along the Tennessee River.
