The Limestone County Courthouse grounds are being restored and reimagined, thanks to a new agreement from Athens Main Street and the Limestone County Commission.

The project, initiated by tornado damage caused to downtown Athens and the courthouse lawn in December 2024, is dedicated and designed to create a lasting gathering space for the Limestone County community, present and future.

The newly arranged agreement acts as a formalization of a commitment between the two organizations—Athens Main Street and the Limestone County Commission—to restore the courthouse lawn.

The area, alongside the rest of downtown Athens, suffered significant damage on December 28, 2024 when an EF-1 tornado tore through the area. The tornado struck the historic courthouse property, downing a cherished 100-year-old oak tree and eradicating more than 6,000 square feet of canopy.

“This partnership reflects what makes Limestone County special. When something knocks us down, we don’t just rebuild; we build better. The courthouse lawn has been the heart of this community for generations, and this agreement is our commitment to ensuring it remains that way for generations to come. We’re proud to stand alongside Athens Main Street in bringing this vision to life.”

Collin Daly, Limestone County Commission Chair

The plans for the new lawn look incredible! (Athens Main Street + Will Hargrove/Alta)

Athens Main Street, alongside design partners Brad Mallette with AMBL Studios and Will Hargrove with Alta Planning + Design, has created a future-oriented plan for the redesigned space.

The plan for the new space honors the history of the site, while simultaneously creating a more welcoming, flexible and community-forward public space.

Central elements of the prospective design include:

  • Grass-festival step terraces offering natural amphitheater-style seating
  • Replanted native shade trees, including oaks + dogwoods
  • Improved pedestrian pathways + permeable surfaces
  • New durable furnishings
  • Layout that preserves sightlines to the courthouse
  • Design elements that incorporate complementary materials like limestone veneer

“The courthouse lawn isn’t just a piece of property; it’s where this community has gathered to celebrate, to mourn, to reflect and to come together for more than a century. This agreement means we’re moving forward together with intention and with the full support of the county behind us. We’re grateful to the Commission for their partnership and their belief in what this space can become.”

Tere Richardson, Executive Director of Athens Main Street

Sustainability is at the core of this project; native plants will assist in the restoration of the site’s ecological health. Locally sourced materials, including regional limestone, will be prioritized in construction use throughout the project.

Additionally, the restored and re-vamped lawn is expected to drive substantial local economic activity in downtown Athens. As it provides a versatile venue for a variety of downtown events, such as:

  • Festivals + events
  • Food trucks + vendors
  • Musicians, bands + other performers

This reimagined space is sure to liven up the already picturesque downtown Athens area. We are excited to follow along with the redesign and enjoy the new space.
