Veterans Day is coming up, and while we all take this time to appreciate those who have served in the Armed Forces in the U.S., some local elementary school students took that appreciation a step further by placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Students from Johnson Elementary School and Cedar Hill Elementary School — both in Limestone County — participated in the placing of the wreath Wednesday morning.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is part of Arlington National Cemetery, and is one of the most visited memorials in the country.

It initially — in 1921 — provided a final resting place for one of America’s unidentified World War I service members. Since then, the memorial has been dedicated to “Unknowns” from later wars.

The Tomb has also served as a place of mourning and a site for reflection on military service.
