The Madison County Commission approved a design contract Wednesday, October 21, 2026, for its new Animal Control facility. The $1.5 million facility will be the first county-owned facility operated by the Animal Control department.
Currently, animals picked up by Animal Control are sent to Huntsville Animal Services or partner shelters, a practice that will continue until the new county facility is built.
The $100,000 design contract was awarded to Studio 2H Design, which includes architectural design and construction documents, bid management and other services, with construction to begin in spring 2027.

New animal control facilities in the area

This facility for Madison County is one of multiple new facilities that have opened or will open soon in the area.
In July 2026, the City of Madison opened its new Animal Control facility, which includes:
- 6 dog runs
- A cat room
- Bathing station
- Outdoor area for the animals
- Improved air-conditioning and heating
Also in July, the Limestone County Commission approved the purchase of 3.55 acres of land from the City of Athens to be used for an animal shelter run by the county.
The Limestone County Animal Care and Control department currently operates out of a facility at 521 US Hwy 72 W in Athens. Commissioners have said the county has outgrown that space and is unable to adequately function at its current facility.
