Decatur PD reactivates bicycle unit
According to the Decatur PD, the bicycle unit provides officers with a “highly mobile, visible and approachable presence throughout the city.”
Unlike traditional patrol vehicles, bicycle officers can quickly navigate crowded areas, access spaces that are difficult to reach by vehicle and respond more efficiently in dynamic environments.
The Bicycle Unit is especially effective during large-scale events such as parades, 5K runs, festivals, and community gatherings held at Point Mallard and other venues across the city. In these settings, officers on bicycles are able to:
- Move seamlessly through dense crowds
- Provide rapid response to incidents or emergencies
- Enhance public safety without disrupting the flow of events
- Engage directly with citizens in a more personal and approachable way
“Our bicycle officers are not only a visible deterrent to crime, but they also create more opportunities for positive interaction with residents and visitors.”
Chief Torry Mack, Decatur PD
Officers assigned to the unit receive specialized training to ensure they are equipped to handle a variety of situations while maintaining a high level of professionalism and service.
