Madison County Commission Chairman Mac McCutcheon gave the State of the County address this week at the Von Braun Center, and addressed some of the concerns county residents have aired regarding the area’s rapid population growth and infrastructure needs.

McCutcheon stressed a proactive approach to the area’s growth and economic plan.

The rapid growth Madison County has seen in the last few years — and continues to experience — was a focal point in McCutcheon’s address Tuesday, and rightly so.

New construction is happening all over the county, with apartment buildings and mixed-use developments leading the way.

“Every subdivision and apartment complex that’s being built is just adding more vehicles to the road. I drive by, and I catch myself sometimes counting doors and when I stop I go, ‘How many people are going to be living here?’ and then I start adding the number of cars that are going to be coming onto the road. Sometimes it’s mind-boggling.”

That being said, McCutcheon said the County Commission is staying ahead of the growth and has implemented its first 10-year infrastructure plan that includes 29 road projects and new budgeting policies — for a total of $101 million.

According to McCutcheon, some of the measures the Madison County Commission is taking to address the massive growth and demands on county infrastructure include:

  • Increasing the staff and equipment of important county departments, from law enforcement to waste management
  • Addressing every recreation center in the county this coming year and hiring more personnel to manage those facilities
  • $50 million for new water projects, including a new $10 million water tank system in the north part of the county
  • Improvements and upgraded equipment for all volunteer fire departments in the county

“My role is to support our quality of life in working on things like infrastructure, our roads and our water systems, public safety, clean living environment, venues for shopping and entertainment, employment for opportunities, recreation for healthy living and family growth, residential developments, educational opportunities, overall economic development. You’re quality of life — you’re quality of life — is the number one focus of your county government.”
