In his State of the City address last week, Decatur mayor Kent Lawrence discussed the momentum the city carries into 2026 from the previous year, and how that momentum is leading to growth in several facets of the city.

Growth, public safety + more highlights from the State of the City

Lawrence highlighted the momentum taking place across the community, from economic investment to public safety, and from youth services to quality of life improvements.
Some highlights from the address included:
- Lawrence said more than $1.5 billion in investment is taking shape across Decatur, reflecting growing confidence in the community and its future.
- The city is investing in leadership development through a multi-year partnership with Durbin Consulting, focused on strengthening communication, alignment and service across departments.
- Decatur Youth Services Director Johnny Jones, CFO Kyle Deemester, and Parks and Recreation director Hunter Allen stressed the support of youth and families; expanding recreation and community programs; and planning responsibly for long-term financial stability.
- City attorney Herman Marks was recognized for 45 years of dedicated service.
- A presentation from Police Chief Torry Mack and Fire Chief Nathan Springer.
