If you have a thumb that you want to turn green, we’ve got all the info you’ll need to get your garden on this spring.

When to plant

When it comes to starting a garden many people opt to buy seedlings or pre-started plants. If you opt for this route, a common rule of thumb is not to plant anything in the ground until after tax day (with some exceptions like tubers and root vegetables). If you are looking to start your plants from scratch with seeds then now might be the time to plant.

Here’s a rough guide for what and when to plant over the next few months:

  • March / April:
    • Start seeds
      • Indoors: Herbs, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons and pumpkins, squash and zucchini
      • Outdoors: Asparagus, carrots, potatoes, onions, peas, turnips
    • Plant
      • Sunflowers, sweet peas, spinach, arugula, broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce, swiss chard
  • April / May
    • Start seeds
      • Outdoors: green beans, okra, melons and pumpkins, sweet corn, sweet potatoes
    • Plant
      • Herbs, peppers, tomatoes, melons and pumpkins, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, squash and zucchini

Go to a garden center or plant store

Once you have an idea of what you want to plant, go to a store that specializes in them.

Not only will you find higher quality plants than you will at bigger box stores, but you’ll also find people who can help walk you through any questions you might have. Trust me, the people who work at these stores know what they’re talking about.

The internet is full of lots of useful information when it comes to gardening, but different regions have different weather patterns and soil conditions so most guides aren’t one size fits all. Plants also can have multiple windows for planting and harvesting, so planting later in the season is often still doable. Talking to local experts will give you the knowledge to make the best gardening decisions for where you live and what you want to accomplish with your garden.

We’ve got a guide on the best plant shops in Huntsville if you’re looking for where to get your supplies.
