After a super cold winter in Huntsville, the warm temperatures last week had me spring dreaming.
There’s no better way to start getting ready for spring than planning out your garden. Check out what you can do now to get ready for the growing season in Huntsville.
Characteristics of zone 7b
According to most maps, Huntsville is located in zone 7b, meaning a few things:
- Our average minimum temperature during the winter falls between 5 and 10 degrees.
- Our last frost date is usually in early April, no later than April 15.
- Our first frost date typically falls around November 15.
Overall, zone 7 is an ideal growing climate. We have warm, damp summers, and the temperatures during the winter usually don’t stay at the average minimums for a long period of time.

Unless you’re planting cabbage, kale or other cold hardy plants, you need to hold off on sowing seeds directly in the ground. However, you can pick up some seed trays from Lowe’s or Home Depot and start your spring garden indoors.

After starting inside:

- Strawberries
What to plant in April (after last frost date)
After starting inside:
- Beets
- Bell peppers
- Eggplant
- Cantaloupe (plant in late April, two weeks after last frost)
- Corn
- Okra
- Squash
- Tomatoes
- Watermelon (plant in late April, two weeks after last frost)
Plant directly:
- Green beans
- Pumpkins
- Potatoes

Plant directly:
- Cucumbers
