The 2020 census revealed Huntsville as Alabama’s largest city, surpassing Birmingham. But recent data shows that Huntsville is now one of the most populated cities in the U.S.

Since becoming Alabama’s largest city, Huntsville’s population has increased by 15.9% as the city welcomes an average of 18 new residents per day, according to the City of Huntsville’s data in 2025.

The Rocket City moved into the Top 100, just behind McKinney, Texas.

Huntsville reported a population of 158,216 in 2000, then 180,105 10 years later. A surge to 215,006 was reported in 2020 and the growth has continued ever since. In fact, Huntsville’s population increase in the last five years equals its increase between 2010 and 2020.

Some studies show Huntsville’s population reaching as high as 260,000 by 2035.

At last year’s State of the City address, Mayor Tommy Battle said he welcomes the growth, but also is aware that the city needs to have the infrastructure in place to facilitate that growth.

“We are proud to welcome new people to Huntsville every day. But more important than the growth is the execution of our strategy to manage that growth and continue to provide a high quality of life both for our residents who have been here for decades and those who have recently moved here.

This strategy includes ample housing inventory across multiple price points, along with key infrastructure investments such as roads and excellent schools.”
