New $42 million City Hall approved in Florence

The City of Florence voted unanimously to build a new city hall, a $42 million facility that will be located on the northeast corner of Tennessee and Pine Streets.

While the vote was unanimous, the process that has not been without some bumps in the road.

New City Hall in Florence approved unanimously

City officials have been discussing the possibility of a new municipal facility for more than five years, but costs were always an issue, and after exploring other options (including upgrading the existing building) since 2020, a new building seemed the popular option.

In April Mayor Ron Tyler said a plan was in the works for the new city hall building, but last week said plans still were not ready, which prompted some pause among residents who have voiced opposition to the new city hall project.

However, Tyler (who sponsored the resolution) specified Tuesday that the resolution is expressing the city’s “intent to move forward” with a new city hall, and the city council has the authority to amend the resolution during the process.

When the new building is completed, the current city hall will be demolished.
