Huntsville City School breaks ground on new Huntsville Middle school campus

The new campus is part of the district’s ongoing capital improvement efforts to provide modern learning environments designed to support student success.
Currently, Huntsville Junior High School serves students in grades 7-8. When the new campus opens, the school will transition to Huntsville Middle School and serve students in grades 6-8. The project is currently scheduled to open in August 2028.
The approximately 125,000-square-foot facility will sit on 15.71 acres and accommodate up to 750 students. The school is currently projected to include:
- 10 classrooms per grade level
- Dedicated elective classrooms
- Extended learning areas
- A social stair collaborative space
- A storm shelter gymnasium
Once building construction is complete and students transition into the new facility, the existing Huntsville Junior High building will be demolished. Following demolition, a new football practice field and track will be constructed. It is expected to be ready for play in January 2029.
The project carries an estimated construction cost of $53 million and a total program cost of approximately $62 million.
The elementary school that will feed into the new HMS include:
- Blossomwood Elementary
- Jones Valley Elementary
- Monte Sano Elementary
- Sonnie Hereford Elementary
“This project represents another major investment in the future of our students and community. The new Huntsville Middle School campus will provide modern educational spaces that support collaboration, innovation, safety, and student achievement for years to come.”
Dr. Clarence Sutton, Huntsville City Schools superintendent
